How to Quit Smoking Without the Patch

Whoever said, “Don’t be a quitter” probably didn’t have a bad smoking habit. Some people smoke on occasion. Maybe they smoke when they are out drinking with friends or under mass amounts of stress. Some people smoke frequently, but not everyday. Maybe they smoke on the weekends when they want to unwind. Other people are chain smokers and may smoke up to two packs of cigarettes a day. These people are totally addicted to smoking. Whether you are an infrequent smoker or a chain smoker, learn ways to quit smoking without the use of the patch.

How to Quit Smoking Without the Patch

1

Mentally prepare yourself. This is the most important thing to remember. You must be mentally prepared to stop smoking. Usually, this happens when you physically see or feel possible health problems. Maybe you are continuously coughing up phlegm. Maybe your lips have become discolored. Sometimes people who smoke have a really hard time moving fast without losing their breath. Is this you? If so, it is time to mentally call it quits.

2

Slow down!If you smoke three times a day, go for twice a day. If you smoke twice a week, aim for once a week. Gradually wean yourself off the bad habit.

3

Clean and disinfect your house. This tactic is very helpful when you come home from work and take a breath of fresh air. You will see just how different the environment smells. You no longer have to walk into a place that reeks of stale cigarettes.

4

Put your body to the test.A sure way to realize how out of shape you and your lungs have become is through exercising. You don’t need to go to the gym to test your abilities and your lungs. Simply take a 10 minute jog around the park, run up and down your steps 10 times each way or do 100 jumping jacks. You will be out of breath! This will prove how much smoking impacts your health.

5

Keep your last pack. Instead of throwing out your last pack of cigarettes, look at them and say, “I am finished after this last pack.” Ideally, it would be great to throw them out, but usually you end up going into the trash to go get them. It sounds disgusting, but it is true. With your last pack put safely away unused, repeat step number one each day for the rest of your life.
